Basic measurements and possible checkpoint locations have been determined for the Second Running of the Area 51 Road Rally.   This TOUR style timed rally will cover a course of about 130 miles with about 80% of the course being paved.
There will be two classes like last year.   The STANDARD CLASS will be for two person teams in which the driver ONLY drives and the navigator ONLY navigates.
The TWO-DRIVER CLASS says it all.   BOTH team members get their turn behind the wheel.   Strategy will certainly come into play in this class as there are four paved legs and four unpaved legs.
There will be two specialty awards in addition to the class winner awards.   The team, regardless of class, that scores the best on the paved legs will win the LOUDNESS of the LAMS or (LOL) AWARD.   The team, regardless of class, that scores the best on the unpaved legs will win the MASTER of the MARBLES or (MOM) AWARD.
Entry fee will probably be $30 per team.   There will be a small number of workers which will FORCE a limit of twenty teams.
Just as last year, there will be cattle guards, low water crossings, washes, livestock on the roadway and their associated agricultural deposits to contend with.
NEW this year, the checkpoints will NOT be shown in the instructions.
INSTEAD, every timed instruction will have an official time and an official mileage.   The checkpoint location will have the same information.   There will be a false instruction inserted where the word checkpoint was inserted last year.   There will also be some additional false instructions afterward to disguise the true checkpoint location.   You will not be able to go within a short distance from a known checkpoint and wait for your time to leave.   Each team must now rally each leg as if every timed instruction is a potential checkpoint.
Feel free to ask any questions about this event.   I will answer them the best I can without destroying the integrity of the rally.
